Oregon Does Handwriting Recognition — In Chinese
An Oregon user from Taiwan posted an interesting link to a screen shot which I thought was worth sharing. When the Oregon’s language is set to Chinese the user claims that spell searches use handwriting recognition to match Chinese text characters. From the post it sounds like the recognition is actually pretty accurate. Unfortunately I can’t try it since my Oregon is in the shop but I’d be curious if this is available as part of the North American/European software or if there is a special Oregon software for the Asia market. Thanks for sharing scx!

Well, I was pretty happy with my Colorado until I read this! Kinda makes sense with the touch screen though. That mighta been enough to tip the scales for me.

My oregon 400t does not have Chinese as an option. And i don’t see a chinese.gtt file for the Oregon.
With the proper gtt and font hacks it should be possible according to http://www.malfreemaps.com/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=289

The Taiwan version of Oregon 400t has different firmware and you must using their firmware to have handwriting recogniton. The Taiwan version enable the Oregon to recognize maps with Asian characters(Chinese, Japanese and Korean). I tried to update my American version of Oregon with the below firmware with NO success. Anyone has any idea of updating?

Maurice,
What type of error/issue do you see? Here’s one suggestion if the exe file is giving some sort of error:
1) Open the Oregon_TWN_v280.exe file with WinZip
2) Extract the file called gupdate.gcd
3) Copy that file to your Oregon under [OR drive]:\Garmin
4) Reboot the Oregon and see if the update will start
Obviously I have no idea what this will do to your Oregon so make sure you backup everything before trying it!

Hi Scott,
I have tried your method before and my Oregon just didn’t recognize the gupdate.gcd file and boot up as usual. However, I can update my Oregon with US firmware by the above method.

Have you tried copying the taiwanese.gtt language file into the Text directory first before running gupdate.gcd? The updater is probably looking for something on the GPS to know that it is a Taiwan version before running. I wonder if it is the language file?

Yes. I have the taiwanese.gtt in the text folder, but the gupdate.gcd can’t run also.
