Last week Garmin released a beta version of Oregon software.  After testing on my own unit and following the various newsgroups and forums I have only come across a few potential issues with the release:

  • Adding a single Custom POI database does not work properly.  The POIs get installed and can be found via spell search but the category button created under Custom POIs doesn’t function correctly.
  • Touchscreen responsiveness may be a little slower after pages changes (or if the unit is busy).   As an example several users have noted that moving quickly to the Alarm Clock page and pressing “Turn Alarm On” may take several seconds before the button responds.
  • Profile changes are a little slower, but they seem to work!

The last two are somewhat subjective and the first is a minor issue so I’ll go ahead and recommend the release even if it is a beta drop because I think it is more stable than either 2.8 or 2.7.   I have not seen any of the crashes or strange behavior associated with profile changes that plagued 2.8.
