GPSMAP 62
GPSTracklog has uncovered some better images and a little more information on the Garmin GPSMAP 62. The specs for the GPSMAP 62st from the Bass Pro site are:
- Incredibly sensitive and easy to use
- Preloaded Worldwide DEM basemap plus Topo 100K
- Brilliant 65K color TFT display
- Crisp 160×240-pixel resolution
- 1 GB internal usable memory
- Includes a variety of essential outdoor apps, including compass, altimeter, and wireless
- High-speed USB serial interface
- External GPS output
- MicroSD card slot (card not included)
- Runs 18 hours on two AA batteries (not included)
- $499.99 US
The only differences for the 62s (no “t”) are related to that model’s lack of preinstalled 100k topos:
- Preloaded Worldwide DEM basemap
- 1.8 GB internal memory
- $399.99 US
I found it interesting that there was no mention of BirdsEye or Custom Maps, but either way these units are sounding at lot like the GPSMAP 78.

Bass Pro site no longer shows GPSMAP 62 – I wonder if Garmin forced them to take it off their site because it’s not released yet?

I’m sure they did. This is pretty typical, once any of the blogs pick up on something like this it is usually removed within a day or two. THe funny part is there are references to the GPSMAP 62 right on Garmin’s own web site.

I see the 62 series displays DEM data. As per my knowledge goes the 60CSx cannot do that. Am I correct? If so – why wouldn’t Garmin point such a significant addition on their website?

You are correct. The 62 supports DEM.

My question was more regarding 60CSx as I’m comparing both units, it’s obvious from some photos that DEM is displayed correctly in 62 series. The reason I’m asking is this one:
http://www.tramsoft.ch/gps/garmin_gpsmap60csx-firmware-upgrades_en.html
“Add capability to see vertical profile of an autoroute using DEM topo data.”
This leads me to the thought they might have enabled DEM rendering through some firmware upgrade (yes, I know, the vertical profile is another story but still) cause in the initial versions according to all reports it’s not possible.

Has anyone tried Garmin’s custom maps with the new 62?
