One problem which many new Oregon and Colorado users run into when they first start using GSAK is that the popular geocaching utility does not support direct GPS transfers using its “Send Waypoints” and “Receive Waypoints” functions.   There are some excellent GSAK macros to help geocachers with the tedious job of importing and exporting between GSAK, the GPS and Groundspeak but Clyde has gone a step further and provided Colorado and Oregon users with native GSAK support, something he calls GPS transparency.

GSAK 7.5, which includes this new GPS transparency feature, has completed its beta cycle and is available for download.  I’ve been using the the beta version for the last two weeks and it has been very stable, but it does include some significant internal changes that require an upgrade of your databases.  Take care to backup your installation before moving to 7.5 if you are already a GSAK user.

Lignumaqua and SnoWake’s excellent import and export macros have also been updated to support the new version of GSAK.  These macros simplify the transfer of data in your GSAK database to the GPS (export) and field notes from the GPS to GSAK and geocaching.com (import).   The updated versions (still in beta) take advantage of GPS transparency as well as adding some great new features.  The import macro has been enhanced to display the cache details when logging a cache and the export macro now enables the user to export child waypoints as POIs.   This later improvement is a big step toward making data management easier on the Oregon and Colorado.   Treating child waypoints as POIs clears the clutter out of your waypoint list and still provides you with access to important parking and trailhead data.   This also makes updating and deleting child waypoints easier since GSAK can directly overwrite the POI files to accomplish this, something which it cannot do if the child waypoints are loaded onto the GPS as waypoints.
