Garmin Releases Topo U.S. 24K on DVD, First Screen Shots of BaseCamp
About a month ago when Garmin announced BaseCamp, they also hinted that the Topo U.S. 24K maps, currently available only in microSD format, would be released on DVD. Garmin’s web site now lists two $130 Topo U.S. 24K DVDs — West and Southwest. West provides coverage for California, Oregon, Washington and Nevada and the Southwest DVD covers Utah, Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico.
As promised these DVD’s will also include a copy of BaseCamp, Garmin’s new outdoor-focused mapping software. Garmin has not released much in the way of details about BaseCamp however the product pages for the 24K maps include a couple of screen shots which show off the elevation profile and 3D terrain view.
All Oregon and Colorado models are listed as compatible with the new maps. No word on the release date for the maps or BaseCamp although GPSTracklog had a tweet today which indicated that the maps will be locked to a single unit much like City Navigator — probably because of the Navteq road data included in these maps.

Does anyone have $130.00 that they can loan me? It’s for a good cause.

Sam, I saw a few places yesterday that were advertising in the $90 range — maybe you won’t need $130!

You could always wait for it to hit BitTorrent, but I would never condone such illicit activities.

Not available yet like many states, although Garmin claims “coming soon”

I heard that these DVDs will be available from Garmin at the end of this month (February 2009). Has anyone heard anything else?

That is what I had heard as well — but forgot where I heard the rumor!

I called Garmin and they confirmed that they are not in stock yet, but they are expected to be shipping at the end of the month although the person I spoke did not sound 100% confident of this… The original Garmin press release mentions that it will ship by the end of the first quarter which translates into roughly the end of March 2009.
We will have to be patient…
By the way, I wonder if pre-ordering makes sense…

I just got off the phone with Garmin and they let me know that they are expecting this product into their warehouses on March 26, 2009. The representative stated that it should ship within days of receipt by their warehouses.

P.S. No info on when BaseCamp will be available for download…

I’m just disappointed that the ship date for this product keeps slipping. REI is often an early recipient of new Garmin stuff – so I keep checking there (online, in person) – hoping it would land in time to use my dividend and 20% off. Alas – doesn’t look like it’s going to make it. The Garmin website doesn’t have any specific detail (It’s been saying “Usually ships in 2-3 weeks” since I first discovered the item) – and I really want this DVD that covers CA/NV/OR/WA, rather than, say, just CA/NV on a card – the DVD is much more useful, not to mention a bargain. Still waiting…

I saw the DVD Southwest product in Summit Hut here in Tucson this week. Checking the Garmin website confirms it is compatible with all three of my GPS units. 60CSx, Etrex Vista, Nuvi 650. With 4 states at 24,000:1 this is the best deal out there right now!

I have a garmin GPSMAP 60 It does not a have an external card slot. 24M internal memory. I am looking for topo mapping to upload. Before I purchase how much can I upload into my GPS at 24k/1?
August 24th, 2009 at 12:34 pm
Mike,
24MB isn’t much these days. I’m guessing you could upload few map segments in your area, but maybe someone who has Topo 24K could comment on how big each segment is (both coverage area and size in MB).
