Garmin Adds Multicache Support in Latest Beta
Multi-cachers rejoice!
Updated: GPSMAP62/78 2.44 Beta also includes multi-caching support and possible altimeter improvements.
If you use an Oregon or Dakota you are probably tired of your friends who own 60CSx’s snickering at you every time you have to enter coordinates for a multi-cache or mystery cache in the field. On the newer units once you enter coordinates for a subsequent stage you are forced leave behind all of the paperless caching features, switch back-and-forth between waypoints and geocaches to see the cache details, and the geocaching dashboard is no longer helpful since it only navigates to geocaches.
With the introduction of today’s betas on the Dakota, Oregon x50 and x00 Garmin has introduced multi-cache support (which works for all cache types not just multis). Once this beta is installed and you are navigating to a geocache you will notice a new button under Geocaches called “Enter Next Stage”. Pressing this button will land you on a coordinate entry screen where you can type in the coordinates for a subsequent stage. This creates a temporary geocache called “Next Stage” which is linked to the original “parent” cache. Selecting it will display all of the parent cache level attributes like description and hint but it will show up on the map with the same icon as the parent cache at the new location. The geocaching dashboards will also identify “Next Stage” as a geocache . You can continue to mark Next Stages as you move through the stages of the cache and when you finally log your attempt the Next Stage will go away. Next Stage gets saved across power cycles so if you decide to bail out half way through a long multi you can pick up where you left of the next day.
There are some limitations. You can only use this feature on one cache at a time since there is only one special Next Stage geocache. Setting a Next Stage on one cache will wipe out a Next Stage you had set for a previous cache. Similarly, within the same multi-cache you will lose coordinates for the second stage when you navigate to the third stage. Garmin does not automatically save each stage a waypoint which would have been a very nice way to prevent this type of data loss. You can deal with this issue manually. Once you have entered a Next Stage and are navigating to it, go back to the Main Menu, select Geocaches>Show Description and press the “Flag” button to save a waypoint. This will save a copy of Next Stage so if you need to get these coordinates later you can (and you’ll have a nice record of the entire multi-cache). Hopefully Garmin will consider automatically adding waypoints in the future or at least prompt when the Next Stage is set to save a waypoint or not.
There are several other changes worth mentioning. All three units received fixes to improve Trip Odometer accuracy. We’ll have to spend some time testing to see if any real improvement was made. The Dakota picked up Track Archiving, the ability to move waypoints on the map page, gpx import progress monitor, track/route detail improvements, and the auto shaded relief changes which were introduced in earlier Oregon x50 betas. Oregon x00 users only pick up the auto shaded relief and trip odometer improvements — it seems like Garmin is starting to limit the changes it is port back into the older Oregons.
Full details on the three releases are below. Please note the special instructions required to upgrade the Oregon x50 from 3.71 and 3.74 on the Garmin site. I had no problems performing the upgrade but it is more complex and error prone than the usual beta upgrade, some people are reporting bricked units. Follow the instructions to the letter if you decide to take the plunge.

Hi Mike! I think at this point Colorado users are only going to get bug fixes.

Hi Scott,
Thanks for the multicache support information as it’s very helpful.
A quick question for you… How in the world did you get your Geocaching Dashboard to look like that???
On my Dakota 20, it (i.e. the “Geocaching – Active” Dashboard) only ever looks like this (even when navingating to the “Next Stage” coordinates):
Also, may I ask what topo map you are using in that geocache-dash2.jpg image?
Thanks!

Oops! Looks like my tags got stripped out…
I was referring to the Geocaching Dashboard shown in the fourth image above as compared to the first image shown in your “Garmin Oregon Beta Adds Dashboards, Improves Track Nav” post.

Mike,
That is the Geocaching – Nearest (vs Geocaching – Active) dashboard. I think it may have been updated on the Oregon because I don’t remember it looking like this either. Not sure if it is supported on the Dakota or not.

Hi Scott,
Thanks for the info. Yes, the “Geocaching – Nearest” Dashboard is indeed on the Dakota as well. However, it doesn’t look even close to being the same (nor nearly as useful either):

Good on the multicache support, but what I’m missing as an Oregon 300 user is the track archiving. Actually not even the archiving but the summary data (total ascent etc.) It’s actually pretty ridiculous that this wasn’t included from the start. Do you guys think that will remain an x50/Dakota exclusive feature? If so this would be good reason for me for moving away from Garmin, along with the 100 JPG limit for custom maps …

Hi Scott,
Thanks for a great review! I own a Dakota 20 for just 2 weeks and I was very hapy to read it will support multi’s. However it is different as I hoped it would be: a lot of multi’s I know have additional well known WP’s. Do you think Garmin will also support “Next WP” too in the future?
Maybe useful for other beta testers: Switching to English solved unexpected shut down issues for me when using the new filtering feature.

Tried this on the 62s. It is now a useless hand grenade. The unit will not go beyond the opening screen and shuts down. The LOADER program never started.

It is only a shame that Garmin doesn’t include the “gpx import progress monitor” for the x00 Oregons. Something that would not be needed if the firmware wasn’t all that buggy.
Shame on you Garmin!
What do they expect us, Oregon x00 users, to do? Painfully count the seconds when we load a new set of .gpx files just to see if it gets stuck? I guess that is really the meaning of being a watchdog…
or are you expecting us to move forward towards newer devices, like the x50 or the Dakotas? From my part, this will be my last Garmin device

What about multicaches that already come with coordinates of additional stages, i.e. with additional waypoints? Do I have to enter the next stage manually as well in such a case (even so it already does exist as a waypoint)? Or will the geocache stay active while navigating to that additional waypoint?
Or am I stuck just as before?

Unfortunately nothing much changes for caches that have well-known next stages. You’ll have to manually enter them as you go along.

Well that’s unfortunate. I think the easiest way to add multicaching support would be to entirely untie the geocaches from the navigation. Simply add a function to open and close a geocache independent from where you’re navigating to at the moment.
That way you could manually add as many waypoints as you want or navigate to already existing waypoints while the geocache would still be accessible.
This would also help when reading hints and logs without having satellite coverage and thus not being able to navigate to the cache.

It looks like they have also changed one of the dadhboard screens with a different layout of info as seen in your “Next Stage on Geocaching Dashboard”:
http://www.gpsfix.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/geocache-dash2-180×300.jpg
I see it shows days since last find now
Will this screen on look like this when doing multi’s or for all cache types?
I like it a lot

This is the newly redesigned “Geocaching – Nearest” dashboard. It works for all kinds of geocaches. See the discussion above.

So after the latest upgrade, the shaded relief does NOT WORK at all on my Oregon 400t in Automobile mode (Navigator NT chip is installed).
Muticache option is good.
Can you please make the tip of the compass arrow BLACK on the Oregon 400???

Allan,
If you check under Setup>Maps>Advanced do you have Shaded Relief On? There was a change to this recently.

Apparently Garmin Oregon 550 firmware version 2.80 was released today, as I got it from myGarmin a little while ago.
It adds a completion bar to the boot screen (for reading in waypoints that first time), and has the filtering functions in the geocaching section. Haven’t tried it in the field yet, and I’m about to look at your comments on multicaches above and see what I can figure out.
