Garmin announced GB Discoverer, a new outdoor mapping product for Great Britain, in October.  Today users are reporting that they are finally getting their hands on GB Discoverer which is supported on the Oregon, Colorado and Nuvi 550.

GB Discoverer maps are sold as regional maps in microSD format.  Each microSD card provides a complete 1:250k routeable map for Great Britain based on Navteq road data.  In addition it includes rasterized Ordinance Survey maps (1:25k scale) for selected National Parks region on the card.   The complete list of maps and data included:

  • Ordnance Survey 1:25k map for the region.
  • Ordnance Survey 1:50k map for the region.
  • Ordnance Survey 1:250k map for the whole of Great Britain.
  • Ordnance Survey 1:1M map for the whole of Great Britain.
  • Full Navteq road network for the whole of Great Britain.
  • Full Navteq address database for the whole of Great Britain.
  • Full Navteq POI database for the whole of Great Britain.
  • Allows turn-by-turn navigation on road.
  • Allows the user to search for and navigate to pre-loaded Points of Interest, such as accommodation, food and drink, car parks, banks, petrol stations, attractions, camp sites, trig points and more.

The list of available regions is here.

Outdoorgb.com and wiggle are listing the products for a little more than £100 per region.

I’m watching this new product with some interest since it seems to be another example of Garmin’s support for raster maps on the Colorado and Oregon platform.    With custom raster map support already available on the DeLorme PN-40 I’m hoping we might see a similar move by Garmin on the Oregon and Colorado — maybe at CES 2009?
