The user manual for the Dakota 10 and Dakota 20 has been published on the Garmin web site.  I’ve taken a quick run through the manual and the software looks almost exactly like the Oregon minus the image/photo viewer, Wherigo, 3D View and the NMEA Spanner support.  About the only difference I noticed is a redesigned Satellite page.Garmin Dakota satellite page

The differences between the Dakota 10 and 20 are made clear in the manual.   The Dakota 10 does not support:

  • Micro SD-card slot
  • 3-axis tilt compensated compass / Sight’n Go
  • Wireless transfer of tracks, waypoints, routes and geocaches between other Garmin GPS’s
  • Barometric Altimeter / Elevation Plot
  • Beeps / Alarm Clock

Based on what I’ve seen with the Oregon 550t the operation of the 3-axis tilt compensated compass looks identical on the Dakota as well, right down to redesigned compass page and massive bearing pointer.

Does anyone out there have a Dakota yet?  I’ve seen a post over on the Groundspeak boards indicating that people are getting the Dakota 10′s at GPSCity but I haven’t seen signs of the 20 yet.  GPSCity and a few others are saying tomorrow.

Hopefully we’ll be able to get a hands-on Dakota review posted in a day or two, so stay tuned…
