Garmin Colorado Beta 2.92 Available
The long wait for Colorado owners who have been hoping for fixes and new features might be over. Garmin has released a modest beta release, 2.92, the first new software for the unit in any form since 2.90 was released in early December. The new beta release addresses seven or eight issues and adds one new feature, the custom power-on text message which was recently made available to Oregon owners. I’m happy to see Garmin rolling out new code for the Colorado, but have to wonder will this be a one-off beta or will we see more functions like Track Manager and Waypoint Averaging brought over from the Oregon. My guess: unlikely.
List of changes from Garmin:
- Added customizable text to unit power-on screen (see \Garmin\startup.txt)
- Improved power on reliability
- Improved connection reliability with Spanner
- Improved appearance of depth data field when using big numbers
- Fixed some scan points not working properly with Garmin GB Discoverer maps
- Fixed issue with Garmin GB Discover maps not showing at some zoom levels with detail set to least
- Fixed errors in user grid entry
- Fixed the time label of the graph in Elevation Plot
- Fixed selection of Leap Day on Calendar, Hunt & Fish and Sun & Moon pages
Garmin has also set up a special email address, ColoradoBeta@garmin.com , to report issues associated with this beta software.
I’m off to verify whether the “power up stability improvements” have to do with the crash seen at power up if you power the unit off with an active autoroute. Update: This issue does not seem to be addressed in 2.92.

Really hope this fixes that active reroute crash. That’s the only thing that’s really been ‘bugging’ me about the Colorado. I have stopped using auto-routing since I discovered that little bug.
Everything else, like waypoint averaging is more icing. It *would* be nice to load multiple tracklogs on the screen, for my Trails project but I can live without it.

•Improved power on reliability
I do experience the problem of unexpected shutoff in the Trip Computer mode. Hopefully this will fix the problem.

I did a quick battery life (Sony CycleEnergy 2000 mAh) test for my Colorado 300 last night and found it improved from 12:40 to 13:50 with backlit off and track log on. Seem like firmware 2.92 also improves on battery life.

Unfortunately it does not seem like Garmin fixed the power on crash after powering off with an active autoroute. I’ve sent it to the beta email hoping maybe it will be fixed in the next release.

On the second test with the 2.92 beta release on my bike I got a couple of big drifts (more than 100 meters!) and the unit was not able to recovery without power cycling.
I saw this big drifts only with my first unit wich was replaced by Garmin (the current one is my third unit).

Today I experimented some other serious issues of the new beta.
After about just THREE hours of use with a new set of batteries, I got the warning “battery exausted”…. also I was able to complete the day with FIVE AND HALF hours of use with the battery indicator to zero…
I also experimented some MONSTRUOUS drifts of about 3-400 METERS into the wood. A friend of mine with a Garmin 705 had a normal error (about 20 meters) due to the high trees.
I am very disappointed by this beta release, I’ll go back to the previous one as soon as possible.
