Garmin Colorado Exits Latest Beta with Software 3.0 Release
I’m still catching up from end of summer travel so I’ll apologize for being a bit behind in my posts. In case you are a Colorado owner and have not noticed, Garmin released version 3.0 software earlier in the week. The full list of changes, which looks a lot like sum total of what Garmin delivered between beta 2.92 and 2.96, includes:
- Added Waypoint Averaging application. (For more information visit our new Trail Tech website at http://garmin.blogs.com/softwareupdates/trail-tech/)
- Added ability to load maps from any img file in the Garmin directory
- Added ability to see a list of points from the map when several points are at the same location
- Added customizable text to unit power-on screen (see \Garmin\startup.txt)
- Improved render quality of GB Discoverer maps and maps with satellite imagery
- Improved power on reliability
- Improved connection reliability with Spanner
- Improved appearance of depth data field when using big numbers
- Fixed some scan points not working properly with Garmin GB Discoverer maps
- Fixed issue with Garmin GB Discover maps not showing at some zoom levels with detail set to least
- Fixed errors in user grid entry
- Fixed the time label of the graph in Elevation Plot
- Fixed selection of Leap Day on Calendar, Hunt & Fish and Sun & Moon pages
- Fixed hunting waypoint symbols not transferring properly
- Fixed issues with routing avoidances
The only item which I see that is new is the last item pertaining to routing avoidances.
The GPS firmware is also the same 2.9 version that was introduced during the beta, which brings me to my one word of caution about this release and any release which includes GPS firmware 2.9 — some users have reported problems in 2.9 which look very much like the problems with large drift errors in 2.6. GPS Firmware 2.8 fixed these problems for me, but it appears that they could be back in 2.9.
I’m speculating that this will be the last major release of software for Colorado users which includes new features. Bug fixes will continue, Garmin has always been pretty good about supporting their older units, but after being out for nearly two years, the fact that almost all major outdoor retailers do not carry the Colorado, and the number of rumors I keep hearing about discontinuation of the product line I don’t see Garmin investing much more effort with this series.
