read all the good reviews about Garmin Dakota 20. Bought one - big mistake - can't seem to get any hiking maps on the thing and the base map sucks. The supplied handbook is about as usefull as a hole in the head.

For the price I paid I could have bought all the printed maps for entire Europe.

If you can convert the image to a jpg you can view it on the Dakota. The Oregon works the same way and you should be able to find help over on the Oregon Wiki http://garminoregon.wikispaces.com

Dakota 10 is a simple, lightweight GPS, If I'm going backwoods hiking this is the GPS I usually reach for because of the size and battery life.

Please, I wonder if the Garmin Dakota 10 serves to hiking in Europe and Brazil to a user and a woman who has never used a GPS.
or do you recommend another model?

Hi...I have a Dakota 20 and really like it so far. I got a Ram mount for it for my Suzuki DR 650 and it works great...problem is the battery life...I would love to wire the bike so that I can just plug the Dakota in while riding. Is there a cable availible or can I make one...With the USB plug, how do I know + / - ?
Thanks,
Colin

Jackie, A lot of the trail data in the maps you get is not accurate. What are the exact maps you purchased?

Hoping you can help with some questions. We purchased an Oregon for snow mobiling in the NorthEast. We also purchased the offroad software for the maps. Although it pretty much serves its purpose it is not accurate (trails are always on the right or left to us, etc.), lakes are not labeled, etc). We also have not figured out how to save way points to back track.
In our adventures we came across several people with the Dakota 20. I was going to purchase this as a gift to switch out the Oregon but see quite a bit of negative comments. Any comments on the comparison of an Oregon vs. Datkota 20?
Thank you,
Jackie

Pat,

I got mine today, and didn't have any problems (I'm in the UK).

The first thing I did though was update the software within it, from 3.1 to 3.8, so I'm assuming that would have fixed a great deal of bugs.

Give that a try.

Good luck,
