Misha,

In response to your points:

1) That is correct but the device takes care of all of the gpx file management for you.
2) You can change the symbols for geocaches, not just waypoints that are geocaches. The custom symbol names for geocaches are here: http://www.garmindeveloper.com/apps/GarminCustomSymbols/CustomGeocacheList.txt

Thanks for the hints on changing custom symbols. Worked on my GPSMAP 78s.
Just few comments on your wish list
1. It looks like deleting individual waypoints is a very difficult option to implement, taking into account the way the waypoints are handled now. They are stored in GPX files and loaded into memory at the start up. So in order to delete an individual waypoint the device has to edit a GPX file.

2. Enhanced custom symbols for caches. Yes, that would be great. Currently you can have custom caching symbols for caches loaded as waypoints, but then you loose the paperless geocaching features for those. For me the solution seems pretty simple - use the symbol not based on the tag, but rather the tag, similar to the way points.

Many thanks to Garmin for adding this feature. Adding the 15 custom icons that I currently use on my GPSMap76CSx onto my newer 550, went without a hitch. The only issue, is with Mapsource. It doesn't recognize the Custom Icons when they are imported back into the program, after the waypoints are manually changed to Custom Icons on the 550. Mapsource substitutes a "black marker" for each Custom Icon. Also sending the file (with all the Custom Icons) to the 550 results in "blue flags" (once the Custom Icons are in place), rather than the Custom Icons being displayed. It would certainly make life easier if I could use the same set of files with both devices. This all works perfectly between Mapsource and my GPSMap76CSx.

Here's hoping this comes over to the x00 series too. You can find custom Geocaching Symbols for your unit at http://gsak.net/board/index.php?showtopic=7033. I've already added some 32x32px icons.

Less enthused at moment now I've seen that geocache override for nothing more than broad type is only supported, though it would be nice to have the proper virtual cache "ghost" ;)

I'm sure its now easy to recreate the way I used to use custom icons in gsak on the 60, with film canisters for micros, flaming devil film canister for micros > 3 difficulty etc :) using POI on the OR. But losing the geocache modes on the Oregon is another kettle of fish.
