Several days ago Garmin released Software version 2.8 for the Colorado.   The list of changes was pretty underwhelming but the good news is that Garmin didn’t seem to introduce any new bugs.  After 2-3 days of testing I can’t find anything that has been broken.   Similarly, I haven’t heard of any reports from users experiencing problems with this update.  As such, I’ll recommend software version 2.8 along with GPS software version 2.8.

The biggest change in the 2.8 update is that gpx files which are stored outside of [drive]:\Garmin\GPX are ignored by the Colorado.  This will be a welcome fix for many (mostly Mac) users because of how some computers delete files.   Macs in particular don’t actually remove files from a volume when you delete them, instead the files are moved to a hidden directory on the volume.   Prior to this fix many users would think that they were deleting gpx files, expecting to see their geocaches, tracks, waypoints, or routes removed from the GPS, only to find that they were still present on the GPS.

There also seem to be a handful of fixes not mentioned in the release notes:

  • Improvements have been made to the map display using City Navigator in urban areas.  If you use City Navigator in an urban area you’ll notice the map display is a lighter color making it easier to read.
  • Several users have mentioned some minor fixes relative to incorrect buoy placements using Bluecharts.  I have not verified this myself.

But will Colorado users see any more feature enhancements?

The bigger news about this release might be the limited number of fixes and enhancements.   Some irate Colorado owners have expressed their frustration with Garmin over a number of enhancements which are available on other Garmin models like the Oregon or 60CSx which are not on the Colorado.  Waypoint averaging, improved track management, remembering backlight settings across power cycles and improved archive performance are features which lead that list.   It is always hard to know what Garmin is planning but to me this feels like a signal that some features might never make it to the Colorado and after being out for nearly 10 months the Colorado is moving toward “maintenance mode”.
