DeLorme PN-40 Nears Ship Date

My primary focus here at GPSFix has been on the Garmin Oregon and Colorado, but I’m always keeping an eye out for new outdoor handheld GPS’s that compete in the same market.

Several months ago DeLorme announced the Earthmate PN-40 as a successor to their first outdoor handheld, the PN-20. A group of lucky beta testers have been putting the new unit through its paces for the last month or two and Rich over at GPSTracklog has got his hands on one. He has posted some first impressions with a number of helpful screen shots.

Although I haven’t played with one myself the mapping capabilities for this device look impressive. The ability to have aerial images on a handheld seems compelling especially given DeLorme’s decision to provide a $30/year “all-you-can-eat” subscription to their mapping data. But like Rich, I’m concerned about the small screen and the PN-40’s ease of use.

If all goes as planned DeLorme should be shipping the first PN-40’s late this week. As I find more reviews I’ll post them here.
